December Events in Florence, Italy

december_florence_italy

Oh hello there December, you cold beautiful soul. A month so full of events in Florence and the emptying of plenty wallets as people complete their holiday shopping. Because of the slow arrival of any semblance of winter, I still can’t find important things such as my gloves, warmer shoes and endless pairs of socks. Seriously who is stealing all of our fuzzy socks and leaving us with a sad, holy (literally holy) reminder of the ghosts of sock’s past.…

What To Expect in Florence This Winter 2016

florence_uffizi

15th century Italian poet Pietro Aretino once said “Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.”   This may seem rich coming from a guy who apparently invented pornagraphy in the literary sense and who some of said died of suffocation/asphyxiation from laughing too much. But he had a point with that quote even if his incorrigible lifestyle certainly raised some eyebrows and caused him to be kicked out of his hometown of Arezzo and then Rome.  A lot…

November Events in Florence, Italy

ginger_Florence_Italy

In November, the smell of food is different. It is an orange smell. A squash and pumpkin smell. It tastes like cinnamon and can fill up a house in the morning, can pull everyone from bed in a fog. Food is better in November than any other time of the year. ― Cynthia Rylant, In November   While Tuscans aren’t in love with cinnamon like us Americans, this quote does ring a bell personally.  I absolutely adore the month of November. A…

Women Artists and the 1966 Flood of Florence

img_4113r

While I type, sun slowly filters in my bedroom window. I can see the red terra-cotta tiles of our neighboring palazzi shine in a way that only happens in late October. A slight chill in the air, but still pleasant enough to keep the windows open. It’s really my favorite season in town, and sooner than you know it November will be here. Coming up just next week marks an important event in local history. The 50th anniversary of the…

October Events in Florence Italy

florence_panorama-sesto-escelsior

Blink and before you know it, September is over. It’s been a fast month, albeit a wonderful one for us. I felt a bit like I had more of a French experience than Italian due to my husband’s parents visiting and our road-trip through Normandy and Brittany. But its great to be home. Sunsets arrive a little sooner, sure, but the current weather brings out the happiest of my moods. The crisp nights mean the humidity spell has finally broken…

September 2016 Events in Florence, Italy

September always remains one of my truly favorite months. It represents Italy’s rich harvest period, a time of abundance or the hope of one during a country’s rich agricultural past. The cities swell with returning Italians, bronzed and relaxed after a week or three on the seaside. Kids ready for school, the buses filling up again. There’s a poignant energy that comes with the arrival of this month and to complete the pretty picture, you can bet your bottom dollar…
