Mmm that cup of clam chowder makes my mouth water! It’s funny, being from the Northeast I always thought of many of these foods as simply “American” but I guess they are particular to our region Reminds me of some good answers to Europeans who think all “American food” is hamburgers and hotdogs…

Glad to hear that Florence is a generally safe spot for people.…I started doing research when I returned hope from vacation there. I was sexually assaulted on a street just beside the Duomo, at 11 AM. A man kept grabbing me, making lewd comments, and trying to pull me into alleys. No one helped, maybe because I couldn’t speak Italian. I am glad to hear, however, that this is a rare occurrence.

I followed the links you provided regarding gaining a visa and residency for folks intending to work, but I didn’t see much related to the retiree hoping to reside in Italy. Hi There! I found your post via google search. I’m a US citizen married to an italian citizen. My schengen visa is expired and we are trying to file the kit. This is a maddening process not to mention my Italian isn’t so great. Do you or anyone know the restrictions around traveling while waiting for the permesso? There is an unbelievable amount of *unclear* information out there on the net & on the italian government sites. I’m actually dumbfounded that there is NO place to find the list of laws, the EXACT items needed per type of permesso, etc etc. Figured I guess… but anyway, I desperately need to go home to USA to visit family and also travel for business as its part of my job (for a USA company). I’m stuck here now and curious whether A. I can travel to UK and USA WITHOUT any receipt and be able to come back (show my marriage certificate) and B. If not, what do I need in order to leave/reenter Italy?
